Monolithos - Climbing Folly
The proposal
To design a freestanding Climbing Folly. The Folly should feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtaposition and non sequitur. It should be a form for Climbing, a space for lounging and space for sitting, talking, socializing, presentations, gathering and musical events.
The objective of the project is to provide visitors with an outdoor recreational area, which engages and promotes interactivity between the architectural folly and the human body. Rock climbing and Bouldering are sports that occupy the " oblique function", that require descriptive geometry to map out the movement of the body in connection with specific feature and characteristics of the tectonic and the texture of the rock/wall. Proposals should also investigate pattern, lighting and atmospheric effects in close relation to the climbing routes and their respective climbing style and difficulty levels.
Design restrictions
From the solid mass size: 18’ W x 18’ H x 36’ D. Remove (40% - 60%) of the solid. Then Create a descriptive abstract drawing, pattern or diagram that will create a rule set for a series boolean operations (using projection geometry methods)
Site
Three primary vantage points: The Schuykill River, the Museum of Art, and the adjacent skate park in Philly.
